The importance of Water Filter maintenance

Why does my refrigerator have a water filter?

More and more people are buying refrigerators with built in water filtration systems. Water filtration
systems not only provide chilled filtered water, but they also provide filtered ice cubes. Ice from
unfiltered water is the same as drinking contaminated, unfiltered water. The bottom line is that
refrigerator water filters provide a barrier against impurities ranging from physical impurities like sand
and dirt to chemical impurities like chlorine leaving you with odorless, clean tasting water.

What is the difference between Original Manufactured Equipment (OEM) and generic water filters?

In terms of functionality there is almost no difference. Usually if there is a difference it’s that one filter
might filter different contaminants then the other. The only other difference you might notice would be
aesthetically, but not to the point where it wouldn’t fit as the original did. As in most industries from
pharmaceutical’s to the auto industry there are OEM parts, and third party aftermarket parts. When it
comes to water filters almost all aftermarket water filters produced are NSF certified. That means that
these water filters meet the same standards as new/OEM water filters.

Should I buy an OEM or aftermarket replacement water filter?

Ultimately the choice is yours. Some people get piece of mind buying OEM parts, and others don’t mind
generic parts. Generally the cost is lower on generic replacement water filters vs. OEM. But no matter
which filters you choose always remember to maintain good water filter maintenance to ensure safe,
clean, good tasting water and ice for you and your family.
